Every day learning
I certainly wanted to have more bang in my first school post, but, well...learning just happens and I don't often realize what is really happening until it's over and my beautiful first-born is reading aloud from a real book.
Today when I went in to get Hurricane up for the day I discovered that she learns best in the early morning hours. If you look closely at the picture below you will see that she has mastered "zipping 101". She's been working on it for several days on her catepillar and quiet book. This morning she took it to real life...her jammies. As you can guess Sarah didn't zip her clothes unless she was getting in or out of them at the appropriate times. I live in great fear of what Sophie will do in her science years.
Here is Sarah practicing her Bible verse in handwriting. We do most of school in our school room, but we've had to start handwriting at the kitchen table while I do laundry.
I'll share her finished product tomorrow.
What else are we doing?
Math
We're on lesson 74 in Horizons K. We've introduced "perimeter". I must say, it's a little daunting to hear my 5 yr old talking about it. Not that it's a mark of genius...it's just not about Diego. That's weird. And if you are interested, I can tell you the perimeter of just about anything in my house now. :)
Phonics
We are rolling through Phonics Pathways and she is an amazing reader. She can read Seuss and First Steps from Pathway. I wish I knew what level she was reading. Her comprehension is getting better.
In Explode the Code she is in book 2. She breezes through the workbook and the extras but I'm afraid to skip ahead from fear I'll miss something.
Read-Aloud
We've just started Storytime with the Millers. It's another Amish book filled with wonderful character building stories.
Other things we are up to:
Learning all about maps. She knows the 7 continents and thankfully, now I do too!! And how to find things on a map. She loves these kinds of activities.
Mindbenders is a puzzle book she likes. I'm sure there is a proper name for them, but they are graphs with different things on the side and top with clues like "The boy's favorite pet is not the one with legs" and you have to mark the appripriate animal in the boy's column. Great for logic development.
Drawing, drawing, drawing.
Those are the highlights for now. Hopefully I'll be able to update here more often.
